The kingdom of Bhutan is located deep in the eastern region of the mighty Himalayan Mountain range. Bhutan is a landlocked country bordered by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China in the north and the Indian state of Sikkim in the west, the Indian state of West Bengal and Assam to the south and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh to the east. Bhutan is an independent sovereign nation with land area measuring 38394 km2, roughly half the land size of State of Maine in USA.

The map of Bhutan is shaped like that of Australia. It has shorter north-south distance and longer east-west distance. Bhutan’s landscape ranges from hot and humid subtropical plains (200 meters above sea level) in the south to freezing sub-alpine Himalayan Mountains in the north where some of the mountains reach an altitude of over 7000 meters above sea level. This drastic change in altitude is visible within a short distance of 200 kms south-north. Such rapidity in the change in geographical altitude has blessed Bhutan with rich diversity of flora and fauna. About 72% of the country is covered under forest and in a rare display of nature’s coexistence the most endangered animals like the great Bengal Tiger and the elusive snow leopard share their habitat in this country.
